Why?

Title: Why?
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 53 × 44 cm
Year: 2003
This work draws inspiration from fragmented classical sculptures in the Acropolis Museum, where limbs and torsos are exhibited apart from their original wholeness. The painting presents a surreal female torso—disarmed, dismembered, yet adorned. A garland of purple flowers encircles the hips, while a black leaf marks the lower abdomen, suggesting both concealment and fertility.
From the severed neck emerge three red roses, their stems upright, defiant. The head—positioned at an unnatural angle—is the artist herself: watching, questioning, refusing to be silenced. She is present but hidden, observing the world from behind the body, asking simply: Why?
This piece is not a lament. It is a quiet confrontation. A meditation on fragmentation, identity, and the rituals of being seen. It invites the viewer to consider: What is preserved when the body is broken? What is revealed when the gaze is displaced?
