Cardinal Bodies, 2006

Medium: Gel pen on aged paper Format: A4
Cardinal Bodies is a symmetrical, symbolic drawing that explores the relationship between nature and humanity through the lens of cardinal directions. Originally inspired by the four classical elements, the final composition evolved into a more nuanced reflection on embodiment and orientation.
At the center lies a geometric mandala—a square enclosing a diamond, which contains a yin-yang symbol surrounded by spirals and linear patterns, suggesting balance and cyclical motion. Extending from this center are four figures arranged in a cross formation, each representing a cardinal direction.
The northern and southern points are formed by stylized female torsos, evoking themes of creation, emotion, and physicality. The eastern and western points are represented by tree-like forms, symbolizing growth, rootedness, and natural cycles. Each figure holds a dark oval above its head, hinting at offering, awareness, or transformation.
In the corners, leaf-like motifs fill the space with organic rhythm and decorative flair—a personal signature of the artist, reflecting a fondness for natural ornamentation and spatial harmony. These details frame the composition and reinforce its mystical and meditative quality.
